WILLIAMSBURG — The Winchester Peewee Red Sox headed into the Rural Ottawa Softball Association championship tournament this past weekend. The Sox finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record and were ranked first heading into the tournament at the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park. The Sox opened the tournament on Friday night against Greely #1 and played Kenmore #1 Heat on Saturday morning.

The Sox then moved on to play against Vars on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal. After getting by Vars, the Sox went into the semifinal against Greely again for a rematch.

Red Sox 11 Greely #1 7
The Winchester Peewee Red Sox played the guests to the team they lost to on Friday night, Greeley #1, in the semifinal of the Rural Ottawa Softball Association championship tournament on Sun., June 25. The Sox ended up in the semifinal after defeating an energized Vars team 15-8 in their quarterfinal.

The winner of this game goes on to play for the championship. The Sox went three up and three down in the top of the first inning and Greely made them pay scoring four runs in the bottom of the first taking a 4-0 lead into the second inning.

The Sox had a better inning in the top of the second getting two runners in scoring position but were unable to cash them but the Sox also sat the next three Greely batters in the bottom of the second.

The Sox only got four to the plate in the top of the third inning and none of them made the round trip. Greely added a single in the bottom of the third taking a 5-0 lead. The Sox scored a single in the top of the fourth inning finally breaking the goose egg and their defence was able to shut Greely down.

The Sox bats exploded in the top of the fifth for four runs tying the game at five but Greely scored another single in the bottom of the fifth taking a 6-5 lead into the sixth inning. The Sox tied the game again in the top of the sixth with a single and held Greely to just four batters.

The Sox were tied six-all heading into the seventh and final unlimited inning. The Sox saved the best for last scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning in a drama finale. The Sox had a five-run lead and all they had to do to move on to the championship game was hold Greely to four runs or less.

The first Greely batter made it to first and stole second and third base. That runner scored on a wild pitch. The tension was so tight but the Sox threw out the next three batters taking the game 11-6 and moving on to the championship final.

Scoring the runs for the Sox were Reise Marriner with three, Ashley Wasylko with two, and Amanda Shay, Sara Sloane, Megan Thompson, Margot Guy, Mia Ziegler and Alexis Sharpley each scored singles.

Red Sox 15 Vars 8
The Winchester Peewee Red Sox finished second in the round-robin portion of the tournament and had home field advantage over Vars who finished in third place in their division in the Rural Ottawa Softball Association’s championship tournament on Sat., June 24.

Vars opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning but the Sox answered with four runs taking a 4-3 lead into the second. Vars went three up and three down in the top of the second inning but the Sox couldn’t take advantage as they were shut out as well.

Vars tied the game with a single in the top of the third inning but the Sox had other plans scoring four more runs in the bottom of the third taking an 8-4 lead. The pesky Vars squad tied the game with a four-run fourth inning but the Sox answered with a single to retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth.

The Sox held Vars off the score sheet in the top of the fifth inning and added a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning making it 11-8. Vars only got four batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning with only one making on the bags but could not finish.

The Sox took advantage scoring another four runs in the bottom of the sixth. In their last at bat, Vars only got four batters to the plate but the Sox defence shut the door taking the game 15-8 moving on to the semifinal.

Scoring the runs for the Sox were Adrianna Van Breugal, Margot Guy and Reise Marriner with three each, Amanda Shay and Meagan Thomson added deuces and Sara Sloane and Mia Ziegler scored singles.

Red Sox 21 Heat 11
The Winchester Peewee Red Sox were the guests for their second game of the Rural Ottawa Softball Association’s championship tournament on Sat., June 24, as they took on the Kenmore #1 Heat. The Sox were looking to avenge their tournament-opening loss to Greely #1 and needed a win to stay in the hunt.

The Sox got off to a quick start scoring the maximum amount of runs in the top of the first inning but the Heat were game and also scored four runs tying the game at four heading to the second.

The Sox kept it going in the top of the second inning scoring another four runs. The Sox’ defence held the Heat to just one run in the bottom of the inning taking an 8-5 lead into the third inning.

The Sox added another two runs in the top of the third and again shut out the Heat’s attack taking a 10-5 lead. The Sox’ offence were dialed in scoring another four runs in the top of the fourth inning and their defence only allowed three batters to the plate throwing them all out at first base.

The Sox were finally stymied in the top of the fifth inning only getting four batters to the dish leaving one in scoring position. The Heat answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 14-7.

The Sox added another seven runs in the top of the unlimited sixth inning. The Heat scored four runs in their last at bat but could not catch the Sox as they took the game 21-11.

Scoring the runs for the Sox were Amanda Shay and Sara Sloane with four each, Adrianna Van Breugal, Margot Guy, Reise Marriner, Ashley Wasylko, Alexis Sharpley and Megan Thompson scored two each and Mia Ziegler scored a single.

Greely #1 9 Red Sox 8
The Winchester Peewee Red Sox travelled to the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park for the Rural Ottawa Softball Association’s championship tournament on Fri., June 23, as they were the hosts to Greely #1 after finishing the regular season in first place. Greely finished the regular season in the fourth seed and were a good defensive team.

Greely opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first inning after getting six batters to the plate. The Sox answered with a single of their own in the bottom of the first taking a one-all draw into the second.

Greely had a big inning scoring the maximum four runs in the top of the second. The Sox kept pace with three runs in the bottom of the second but trailed 5-4. Greely kept the pressure on and notched another three runs in the top of the third inning for which the Sox had no answer.

Greely took a 9-4 lead into the fourth inning. Greely went three up and three down in the top of the fourth inning and the Sox took advantage scoring three runs as all nine batters made it to the plate but still trailed 9-7 heading into the fifth inning.

Greely only got four to the plate in the top of the fifth and none of them made it around the bases. The Sox had a chance to take the game in their last at bat just needing two runs to tie and three runs to win.

The Sox got six batters to the plate but only managed to score one run dropping their first game of the playoffs and their season 9-8. Scoring the runs for the Sox were Sara Sloane, Ashley Wasylko and Mia Ziegler with two each, and Megan Thompson and Alexis Sharpley each scored singles.
