NEWINGTON – The South Stormont Fire Rescue and the Ladies Auxiliary held a family fun day at the Newington Fairgrounds on Sat., Aug. 12. With the help of student volunteers the groups held a barbecue, slip and slide, teddy bear clinic and firefighter kids’ challenges for families to enjoy.

Firefighters Allen Manley and Jared Steele showed Elliana Shaver, Karis Shaver and Madison Bilmer how to dress like a firefighter at the first-ever Newington family fun day on Aug. 12. Sawyer Helmer photo

Children present for the day had the chance to enter into a draw where the winner will receive a free visit from a fire truck and some firefighters for their next birthday party.

The event was all donation-based with any funds raised going toward local man Louie Blair and his wife Fae. Blair had just received a successful lung transplant the night before the family day fundraising event.

This was the first family fun day hosted by the Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary, but both groups hope to make it an annual tradition.
