WINCHESTER—The Winchester Bantam Girls Red Sox opened their regular season in the Rural Ottawa Softball Association (ROSA) this past week with two games. In their home opener the Red Sox welcomed Gloucester to the Club 100 Ball Park on Mon., May 7 and travelled to Kenmore on Wed., May 9, to take on Kenmore #1.

The Sox were coming off a great season last year winning the Peewee Division against Gloucester but this year could be a little tougher as they move up into the higher age group.

Sox 23 Kenmore 9: In their second game of the new season, the Winchester Red Sox travelled to Kenmore. The Red Sox opened their season with a 12-6 victory over Gloucester in their first season as bantams and looked to keep the momentum flowing. The Red Sox scored two runs in the top of the first inning to which Kenmore had no answer.

The Red Sox scored four more runs in the top of the second inning taking a 6-0 lead but Kenmore battled right back with four runs in the bottom of the second to make it 6-4. The Red Sox’s bats remained hot, scoring another four runs in the top of the third inning and this time held Kenmore off the score sheet in the bottom of the inning taking a 10-4 lead into the fourth inning.

It didn’t get any better for the Kenmore defence as the Red Sox kept hitting everything they saw, scoring another four runs in the top of the fourth. Kenmore scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Red Sox made it 18-6 after scoring four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kenmore had no answers in the bottom of the inning just getting four batters to the plate. In the unlimited inning, the Sox belted home another five more runs and Kenmore only managed three.

The Red Sox took the game 23-9 winning their second game of the season. Scoring the runs for the Red Sox were: Alison Roach with four, Adrianna VanBreugel, Sara Sloane and Amanda Shay each scored three, Margot Guy, Emily Ryan, Alexis Sharpley and Ashley Wasylko-Fletcher all scored two and Reise Mariner and Megan Thompson scored singles.

Sox 12 Gloucester 6: In their 2018 season opener, the Red Sox welcomed Gloucester. Gloucester opened the scoring with a two-run top of the first inning getting seven batters to the plate. The Red Sox answered with the maximum four runs allowed as a mercy per inning taking a 4-2 lead into the second inning.

Gloucester tied the game with two runs in the top of the second inning but the Red Sox retook the lead with a single run in the bottom of the second. The seesaw affair kept swaying as Gloucester scored another two runs in the top of the third inning taking a 6-5 lead.

The Red Sox answered in their half of the inning scoring four more runs in the bottom of the third taking a 9-6 lead. Gloucester had no answer in the top of the fourth inning as they went three up and three down.

The Red Sox added another three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-6 lead. Gloucester sent four batters to the plate but the Red Sox’s defence held them on the bags taking the game 12-6 for their first win of the season.

Scoring the runs for the Red Sox were: Emily Ryan with three, Alison Roach and Reise Mariner each scored two and Ashley Wasylko-Fletcher, Amanda Shay, Megan Thompson, Margot Guy and Sara Sloane all scored singles.
