Playoffs open
In the opening game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League round robin playoff series first place Blue welcomed fourth place Black. The overpowering Blue team’s forward Rebecca Kennedy sneaks past Black’s defender Teresa Schoones. Kennedy had herself a night to remember scoring a hat trick helping her team to an 8-1 victory.      Moore photo

CHESTERVILLE—In the first round of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League first place Blue welcomed fourth place Black in the early game and second place Red played host to third place yellow in the second game of the night.

Blue 8 Black 1
In the first game of the night, the first place Blue team took on the fourth place Black. Black was one of only two teams that beat Blue but both teams were short benched for that game. Blue opened the scoring 5:55 into the game when Lindsay Cummins fired one to the back the cage from Carly Crump taking a 1-0 lead.

Blue made it 2-0 when Rebecca Kennedy blasted one home from Cummins and Jaclyn Crump at 13:39. Blue took a three-goal lead when Kennedy scored her second of the game from Carly Crump and Kelly Francis at 16:50.

Black finally got on the scoreboard as Teresa Schoones slapped one to the back of the net from Alyson Erwin and Jessica Winters with 1:30 showing on the clock in the opening frame. Blue took the 3-1 lead into the second period.

Blue added to their lead when Kelly Francis sniped and unassisted goal at 8:40 of the second period to make it 4-1. Blue made it a 5-1 game when Carley Crump lit the lantern from Cummins and Jaclyn Crump at 11:23 and 6-1 when Kennedy completed her hat trick from Leigh Ann Dearing at 16:45 from Dearing and Becca Alves.

Blue took a commanding 6-1 lead into the third period. It was all Blue again in the third period as Carly Crump scored her second goal of the game at 17:39 of the third period from Kennedy and Dearing to make it 7-1. Blue closed out the scoring with just 1:23 showing the clock as Jaclyn Crump rifled one to the back the net from Carly Crump.

Blue took the game easily 8-1 taking the lead at the top of the round robin format of the playoffs with two points. Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Roxanne Crump.

Red 2 Yellow 1
In the second game of the night in Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League Red played host to Yellow on Thurs., July 27, at the Chesterville Arena for the first game of the round robin playoff format. Red finished the season in second place after winning their last regular series game against Yellow last week.

Red opened the scoring at 11:04 of the first period as the league’s leading scorer, Lesley Ann Tupper scored an unassisted goal to give Red the first lead of the playoffs.

Yellow answered right back with a goal at 12:01 as Jodi Hall fired one to the back of the net unassisted tying the game at one.The two teams took the one-all draw into the second period. The two teams were dead even throughout the season and it showed defensively in the second period as neither team could find the back of the net taking the 1-1 tie into the third period.

Red retook the lead at 11:32 as Kaitlyn Kerr slapped a one-timer from Geena Rose and Tupper. Yellow held Red off the board for the remainder of the game but they needed offence which they didn’t get as Red hung on for a slim 2-1 victory tying Blue at the top of the round robin with two points. Picking up the win in Red’s goal was Jen Byrne.
