MAXVILLE – The Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry Relay for Life was held in Maxville at the Kenyon Agricultural Society fairgrounds on Fri., June 1. The annual event runs from 6 p.m. until midnight and featured group walkers, survivors, live entertainment and a meal before the official start.
Before the opening ceremonies, the Glengarry Pipe Band led the way for the Survivors’ Victory Lap. The lap and the entire event commemorates the lives that have been lost but also celebrates the daily victories of people fighting against cancer.
Teams riddled the grounds with at least one member from each team being on the track at all times. The Maxville based annual event has been a constant since 2001. This year 80 teams participated in the event and $170,000 was raised surpassing the $50,000 goal. All of the funds raised will go towards cancer research and local support services.
The top three fundraisers, according to the cancer society website, were Francous Bazinet with $3,159.70, Erin Davis with $3,125.12 and Louise Besner Levac with $2,013.50. The top three teams were Famille Bazinet with $4,731.70, Paul/Erin with $3,709.02 and Team Brian Wensink with $3,116.60.
