WINCHESTER — The Winchester Bantam Girls Red Sox played one game this past week as they welcomed the Casselman Voltiguers on Monday night.

Voltigeurs 22 Red Sox 15: The Winchester Bantam Red Sox welcomed the Casselman Voltiguers to the 100 Club Ball Park on Mon., July 2, in the Rural Ottawa Softball Association. The Red Sox went into the game in first place in the standings with Gloucester and Casselman sitting in second place just two points behind having games in hand.

The Red Sox won their last game against Kenmore by a slim score of 17-16 and were heading into their last regular-season game. The Voltiguers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.

The Red Sox battled back in the bottom of the first tying the game at four. The Voltiguers continued to pour on the offence scoring another four runs in the top of the second inning but again, the Red Sox answered, scoring another four runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at eight.

The Voltiguers retook the lead in the top of the third inning scoring a single run. The Red Sox took advantage scoring two runs in the bottom of the third taking their first lead of the game 10-9. The Voltiguers regained the lead scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning but the Red Sox answered with four runs to retake the lead by a score of the 14-12 in the bottom of half of the fourth.

The Voltiguers retook the lead scoring four runs in the top of the fifth and held the Red Sox to just a single run in the bottom of the fifth taking a 16-15 lead into the final inning. The Voltiguers scored six more runs in the top of the sixth inning making it a 22-15 game.

The Red Sox had a chance for a comeback but they Voltiguers’ defence held up taking the game 22-15.

Scoring the runs for the Red Sox were Amanda Shay and Alexis Sharpley each scored three, Reese Mariner, Ashley Wasylco-Fletcher and Alison Roach scored two runs a piece and Mia Ziegler, Emily Ryan and Margot Guy all scored singles.

Up next: The Red Sox head to the Rural Ottawa Softball Association season ending championship tournament beginning Fri., July 13, with two games at the Lafortune Ball Park in Embrun against Greely at 6:30 p.m. and then play their second game against Vars at 8:30 p.m. Their third game is on Sat., July 14, at 12 p.m. for a semi-final game, if necessary.
