WILLIAMSBURG—The Williamsburg Minor Pioneers played a double header this past Thursday as they welcomed the Winchester Red Sox.

The Williamsburg Minor Pioneers welcomed the Winchester Red Sox to the J. C. Whitteker Ball Park on Thurs., June 27, in the Upper Canada Little League. The Pioneers’ defence began the game on high, shutting down the Red Sox in the top of the first inning; allowing just five batters to the plate. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Donovan Shaver run. 

The Red Sox scored four runs in the top of the second inning to which the Pioneers had no answer in the bottom half of the inning. 

The Pioneers’ defence shut the door on the Red Sox offence allowing just four to the dish. The Pioneers failed to take advantage in the bottom of the third as the Red Sox kept their 4-1 lead heading into the fourth inning. 

The Red Sox scored a single in the top of the fourth but the Pioneers bettered that, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Sox took a 5-4 lead into the fifth inning. 

The Red Sox blew the game wide open scoring five more runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn’t enough as the Red Sox took the game 10-7. 

Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Christian Markell with two and Donovan Shaver, Emmett Lemire, James Barrie, Callum Larocque and Carter Froats with singles. Pitching for the Pioneers were Lemire in the first and second innings, Shaver in the third and fourth and Reed McCadden in the fifth.

In the second game of the double header between the Williamsburg Minor Pioneers and the Winchester Red Sox on Thurs., June 27. The Red Sox looked to sweep the two games of the night and the Pioneers were looking for a split. 

The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the first inning getting three runs home. The Pioneers failed to score in the bottom of the inning and trailed 3-0 heading into the second inning. 

The Pioneers’ defence came up big in the top of the second allowing just three Red Sox batters to the plate none of which were able to score. The Pioneers couldn’t take advantage leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the second.

The Red Sox scored four runs in the top of the third inning taking a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers’ offence kicked into gear in the bottom of the third inning scoring the maximum five runs allowed getting to within two runs of the Red Sox. 

The Red Sox got a little luck as the weather deteriorated and the game was called due to lightning in the area. The Red Sox took the game 7-5 sweeping the double header in two games. Scoring for the Pioneers were Donovan Shaver, Reed McCadden, Emmett Lemire, James Barrie and Charlie Chafe. Pitching for the Pioneers were Donovan Shaver in the first and second innings and Reed McCadden in the third.
