WINCHESTER—The Williamsburg Junior Pioneers played just a single game this past week as they welcomed the Mississippi Whitecaps on Sunday night.

The Williamsburg Junior Pioneers welcomed the Mississippi Whitecaps to Morgan Field in Winchester on Sun., July 14, in the Ontario District 2 Little League. The Juniors began their season with a seven all draw against the Kemptville Wildcats and looked to go undefeated in the summer season against the 1-1 Whitecaps. 

The Whitecaps went three up and three down in the top of the first inning, two were struck out by the Pioneers’ pitcher Nate Thompson. The Pioneers bats came to life in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs but they left the bases loaded taking a 4-0 lead into the second inning. 

The Whitecaps scored the maximum five runs in the top of the second inning taking a one run lead. The Pioneers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second but again left the bases juiced. 

The Pioneers took a slim 6-5 lead into the third inning. The Pioneers’ pitcher, Nick Guy allowed just one Whitecap on base but struck out the other three in the top of the third. The Pioneers failed to take advantage offensively going three up and three down in the bottom of the third but carried the 6-5 lead into the fourth inning. 

The Whitecaps only got four batters to the dish in the top the fourth inning and couldn’t score. The Pioneers got two runners in scoring position but were unable to bring them home in the bottom of the fourth. 

The Whitecaps grounded out three times only getting one on the bags in the top of the fifth inning and the Pioneers made them pay, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth taking the game 8-5. With the win, the Pioneers move to 1-0-1. 

Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Nick Guy with two, Terrence Mudde, Dawson Coleman, Brady Barrie, Nate Thompson, Mason Hummel and Seb Lafrance. Pitching for the Pioneers were Thompson in the first inning and Guy in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
