MORRISBURG—The Morrisburg Lions played three games this past week as they travelled to Chesterville on Wednesday night to take on the North Dundas Rockets, welcomed the Rockets on Saturday night and the Metcalfe Jets on Sunday afternoon. 

Lions 5 Jets 4 (OT)

The Morrisburg Lions welcomed the Metcalfe Jets to the Morrisburg Arena on Sun., Feb. 9, in the NCJHL. The Lions went into the game with the league’s worst record of 3-28-1 for just four points but they had a chance to play spoiler as the Jets sat in a third place tie in the West Division with the West Carleton Inferno. The Inferno had more wins so they actually hold down the final playoff spot so the Jets needed a win. 

The Lions opened the scoring when Cam Sherrer snapped one home from Kevin Doyle at 11:57 taking a 1-0 lead. The Lions made it 2-0 when Doyle ripped one home from Jack Ingram and Aaron Smith at 12:27. 

The Jets closed the gap to one when Sam Wilson scored from Mike Armstrong and Alex Cloutier at 14:47 on the power play. The Lions took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The teams battled to a scoreless second, until the Lions retook a two-goal lead with just 1:52 remaining as Sherrer scored his second of the game from Justin Shay and Doyle. 

The Lions took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. The Jets scored a shorthanded goal just 2:25 into the third period as Armstrong scored to make it 3-2. The Jets tied the game on another shorthanded goal at 4:53 as Connor Weatherhead scored from Dylan Tokessy and Colin Faubert. 

The Jets took their first lead of the game when affiliated player, Alec Bergeron scored from Faubert and Alex MacNeil at 13:56. 

It appeared as though the Jets were headed to a 4-3 victory but with just 46 seconds remaining, the Lions knotted the affair at four as Griffin Patterson rifled one home from Kayne McCadden and Shay on the power play. 

Neither team was able to pull off the victory before regulation expired so the game headed to a five-minute three-on-three overtime period. The Lions took the game in exciting style as Wade Moak fired home the game-winning goal at 2:07 of overtime from Ingram and Aiden Daly. 

The Lions took a 5-4 win giving themselves their fourth victory of the season. Picking up the win in the Lions’ goal was Riley Phillips and suffering the loss in the Jets’ goal was Jett Miller.
