SOUTH STORMONT – These past few months, the South Stormont Fun Raisers have been busy raising funds for initiatives in their municipality. These include a recent baseball tournament in Ingleside and the popular Vendors Village events which provide local artisans and entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their work on Fridays in Ingleside.

SSFR president David Smith and his fellow volunteers are working to bring a few more activities this fall.  These include a golf tournament, hockey challenge and an Elton John Tribute Show.

The weather was excellent for a fall golf game on Sept. 11 when the Fun Raisers golf tournament was held on Sept. 11 at the Upper Canada Golf Course. Smith confirmed there were 40 golfers who participated in the fully sponsored event. During a dinner at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 569 in Long Sault, prizes for “men and women closest to the tee and longest drives” and a prize for all golfers were presented. He thanked all participants and “our amazing businesses for their support.”

Smith mentioned plans are coming together for “The Local Heroes Hockey Challenge” which is being held at the Long Sault arena on Oct. 3 between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. with “some proceeds from this game” going to “our local Meals on Wheels.” The South Stormont Fire Fighters/OPP team, described as “real strong” will face-off against the Business team, which Smith commented was “filled with many high-level players from the NHL, AHL, and Junior ranks.”

He continued a “pregame celebration” is planned to acknowledge the contributions during the pandemic of the local heroes who kept us safe and “those businesses who kept our economy going” and Meals on Wheels “who were needed more than ever at that time.” COVID-19 protocols and capacity limits will be followed at the event.

For Elton John fans, an Elton John Tribute Show will be held on Oct. 30 at the South Stormont Community Hall, beginning at 7 p.m. with Whisky on Tap, a local band opening the event. Smith mentioned the number of tickets released will be determined once capacity limits for the event are determined, continuing “orders of eight or more tickets” are being taken and they will be released once capacity is confirmed. Tickets are $30 each and can be “reserved through any club member” or by messaging Dave Smith.
