GREELY – Despite the apparent decline in Covid infections and a cautiously optimistic approach for lifting restrictions by the Ontario government, the organizers of the Greely Winter Carnival have decided to cancel it.

This would have been the 50th anniversary of the carnival.

Doug Thompson, the president of the Greely Community Association board of directors said, “The Greely Community Association, (GCA), board of directors has made the very difficult decision to cancel plans for our 50th Annual Greely Winter Carnival. In consultation with residents, businesses, and city officials, it was determined that it was in the best interests of our residents to cancel this year’s carnival.”

Thompson thanked all the volunteers and organizations that had stepped forward last December, as the association began planning for another carnival which was originally scheduled for Jan. 27 – 30.

“We had postponed our Winter Carnival to a later date in February,” he said.

“Unfortunately, conditions have not improved to a point where we felt it was in the best interests of our residents to continue with our plans. In our unanimous decision to cancel, the GCA board committed to a more exciting and vibrant Canada Day celebration on July 1 in Greely.”
