CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League featured two games on Thursday night as Yellow welcomed Blue in the opening game and Red hosted Black in the night cap.

Yellow 2 Blue 1
In the first game of the evening in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League on Thurs., June 22, Yellow welcomed Blue at the Chesterville Arena. Blue was coming off a win the previous week after losing their first game of the season in week seven and looked to get on another long run.

Yellow went into the game in second place just four points behind Blue. Yellow opened the scoring at 7:40 of the first period when Jodi Hall snapped one to the back of the net from Angie Van Gurp Helmer and Lindsay Waddell taking a 1-0 lead.

Neither team could score before the buzzer went off ending the first period and Yellow took the 1-0 lead into the second period. Yellow took a two-goal lead when Jennifer Whitteker bulged the twine at 11:29 of the second period from Hall and took a 2-0 lead into the third period.

Blue’s usually reliable offence failed to kick in but they were able to get to within one as Leigh Ann Dearing slapped one home from Cinnamon Boulanger with 4:06 remaining in the game. Blue pressed Yellow but Yellow’s goalie Cashelle Baldwin was able to keep Blue’s attack at bay even after Blue pulled their goalie with just over a minute and a half remaining.

Yellow hung on for the 2-1 victory handing Blue only their second loss on the season and moved to within two points of the number-one team. Picking up the win in Yellow’s goal was Baldwin.

Red 2 Black 1
In the second game of the night of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League, Red played host to Black. Both teams were coming off losses the previous week and looked to get back on track with a win. Red opened the scoring at 7:10 of the opening period as Geena Rose rifled one home from Kim Elliott and Lesley Ann Tupper to take a 1-0 lead.

Black knotted the affair at 9:20 when Jessica Winters was allowed a penalty shot after one of the Red players put their hand on the ball in the crease and she made no mistake. Red tied it up just 10 seconds later when Tupper sniped one at 9:30. Red took a 2-0 lead into the second period.

The teams traded shots and scoring chances but neither were able to find the back of the net in the second period and Red took the slim 2-1 lead into the third. Both teams were a little worn out as both sides were short benched and didn’t create much in the third period.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the third period as Red took the game 2-1, moving to within two points of second-place Yellow.
